WESTPORT — Having never played a match in team tennis his entire life, Greenwich junior Eric Toub was struggling to deal with the crowd that surrounded the Staples High School courts. When he was mobbed by teammates after leaving the court at the end of his grueling three-set match at No. 2 singles against Max Zimmerman, his victory wasn’t just for him.
The good news spread quickly as his win clinched a massive victory for the Cardinals, who put an end to the Wreckers’ long winning streak in a 4-3 triumph on Monday. Staples hadn’t lost a team match since the end of the 2013 season — a span of 46 matches.
