Owners of McDonald's restaurants and Dasani bottled water are offering a total of $30,000 to nonprofit organizations in Westport and Fairfield that focus on nutrition programs.

Six grants of $5,000 each will be awarded as part of McDonald's second annual New York Metro Nutrition Network, the company's tri-state area restaurants said in a news release. The money includes $25,000 offered by McDonald's and $5,000 by Dasani.

Applications will be evaluated based on the expected impact of the program on nutrition awareness in the community.

Each of the six Westport-Fairfield winners will be acknowledged with a presentation in its community.

Applications are available at www.McDNYMetroNutritionNetwork.com. The application deadline is May 15.

The promotion is designed to help people make informed food choices and is tied into the rollout of what McDonald's said would be "wholesome menu items."
