Using your head makes a difference in soccer.

That's what the Staples boys soccer did Friday in its season-opening 1-0 road victory over St. Joseph at Indian Ledge in Trumbull.

Staples senior Terence Gibbons scored on a header after receiving the ball off a deflection on a free kick with 10 minutes remaining in the half. Classmate Steve Smith had four shots on net.

The Wreckers outshot St. Joseph 17-6 and had a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. They would have won by more if it weren't Cadets senior goalie Paul Monks (11 saves).

Junior co-captain James Hickok made three saves for Staples.
