GFA roundup: Girls hoops falls to Greenwich Academy

The GFA girls basketball team fell to Greenwich Academy and Ethel Walker School last week. After a long break from games and practices due to the snow, GFA found its rhythm a bit bumpy in the first game of the week against GA, where they eventually lost 70-55.

Although the Dragons started the game with numerous 3-point shots, Greenwich Academy eventually pulled away. GFA was led by junior captain Lexi Kimball, who finished with 25 points. Freshman Katherine Marcus had nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Last Saturday GFA lost to Ethel Walker 45-39. Junior Olivia Sullivan was the team's leading scorer with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Kimball finished with 14 points and six steals.

Wrestling

GFA to the mats at the Western New England Independent School Wrestling Association Championship Tournament last Saturday at the Canterbury School. Senior captain Simon Stone placed fifth at the tournament. Winning his first two matches, Stone had a difficult matchup in the semifinal and lost.

Junior captain Hans Forland won his third consecutive title at the WNEISWA Tournament. He won his first two matches by fall, without giving up a point to his opponents. In the final, he won a tough battle against an opponent from the Brunswick School. Sophomore Sam Stewart also made it to the finals without giving up a point to any of his opponents, but lost in the finals to an opponent from Chase Collegiate School.

Stone, Forland and Stewart will compete at the New England Tournament next weekend at Avon Old Farms, all aiming to qualify for the prep school national tournament at Lehigh.

Squash

The GFA girls squash team lost 6-1 to Millbrook. Freshman Katie Mackle defeated her opponent in an exciting four game match, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, and 11-3.

The next day the girls traveled to the Masters School and won 6-1. Senior Avery Vanacore dispatched her opponent in three games, 11-4, 11-1, and 11-2. Freshmen Kyra Lerner (Westport) and Christina Brittis earned wins after three games as well 11-1, 14-12, 11-7 and 11-2, 11-6, 11-1, respectively. Freshman Charlotte Cohen (Westport) played the most exciting match with all of her teammates watching. She came out victorious after a five-game match (11-3, 5-11, 15-17, 11-8,11-7).

Boys basketball

The Dragons had a win and a loss in FAA games last week. On Tuesday, GFA won over King 66-57, despite missing leading scorer senior Dom Cristiano (ill) and senior Chile Larraguibel (broken nose). Junior Elvin Rodriguez had 16 points and senior Isaac Manton had 13 points. Junior Sunday Okeke hauled in 21 rebounds.

Last Friday GFA fell to New England Class C No. 1 ranked and undefeated St Luke's School 86-77.
