Heavy fire erupted at a Vani Court residence Monday evening, and although first reports indicated children might be trapped inside, an aggressive search revealed no one was home at the time of the incident.

The blaze was reported about 5:20 p.m. Monday, and firefighters on Engine 4, the first unit to arrive on scene, reported dense smoke and flames had burned through the side of the two-story structure.

A neighbor told fire crews that children might be on the second floor. Firefighters from Truck 2 and Engine 2 searched the premises while those from Engine 4 doused the main body of the fire on the first floor.

No one was found in the building, and firefighters later learned the family was not at home at the time of the incident.

Meanwhile, a Fairfield engine was dispatched to provide backup coverage for other potential emergencies in town.

No injuries were reported by firefighters extinguishing the blaze. Fire crews cleared the scene shortly after 8:30 p.m.

Cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal's office.
