A family musical about a dog who loves books so much he opens his own bookstore will be staged Sunday afternoon, March 1, at the Westport Country Playhouse.

"Dog Loves Books" is based on the New York Times best-seller by the British children's author and illustrator Louise Yates and is part of the playhouse's Family Festivities Series.

The show's running time is about one hour, and the playhouse recommends the musical for children 5 to 8.

Performances are scheduled at 1 and 4 p.m. Tickets are $20.

The main character is named Dog, simply enough, and he loves everything about books, the playhouse said in a news release. But the first few people who wander into his store aren't interested in books, and Dog is left alone in the shop.

He soon realizes, however, that when he is surrounded by books, he's not alone. Dog sets out to read all of the books in his store, and when those non-buyers return, he knows exactly what to recommend.

The musical was adapted from Yates' 2010 book by the nonprofit ArtsPower National Touring Theatre, which has been producing children's and family theater for 30 years, the playhouse said.

The New Jersey-based troupe has performed before more than 13 million people in 49 states.

The playhouse's Family Festivities Series is presented on selected Sundays from November through March. After "Dog," its next show is "Curious George," on Sunday, March 29, about the inquisitive little monkey of books, movies and the award-winning PBS television show

At each performance, the playhouse collects donations of new and gently used children's books for Read to Grow Inc., a nonprofit that gives books to Fairfield County families with limited access to them and to community programs that serve those families.

Bins for donated books will be in the playhouse lobby, the theater said.
