A fast-food chain that promotes healthy, low-calorie fare plans to serve up a new restaurant in the Playhouse Square shopping center.

Energy Kitchen will open a local restaurant in an approximately 2,300-square-foot space on the lower level of a freestanding building on Post Road East adjacent to the Playhouse Square entrance. Pierre Deux, a French Country decor store, formerly occupied the storefront.

Final approval of the site plan for the outlet was granted by the Planning and Zoning Commission last week.

Energy Kitchen's fare includes burgers, turkey meatloaf, grilled salmon, wraps, salads, smoothies, as well as breakfast offerings. No item on the Energy Kitchen menu is more than 500 calories and "everything is grilled, baked or steamed, never fried," according to its website.

The restaurant chain also has several outlets in Manhattan, New Jersey and Florida.

Energy Kitchen's parking allocation will include 14 spaces in a small lot in front of the restaurant, as well as nine joint- parking slots in the main Playhouse Square parking lot.

The P&Z Commission also approved last week site plans for two new restaurants at the National Hall complex on the west bank of the Saugatuck River.

A week before, the P&Z signed off on a plan by the Saugatuck Grain & Grape liquor store to open a wine bar at 40 Railroad Place.
