A car burst into flames after striking the Interstate 95 median in Westport on Monday night, but the driver escaped the wreck with minor injuries, according to firefighters.

The single-car crash took place about 7:50 p.m. Monday between northbound Exits 17 and 18.

The car, which caught fire after hitting the median, was only one involved in the accident. The female driver was able to get out of the vehicle before emergency-services personnel arrived on the scene.

The fire was quickly extinguished by Westport firefighters, and the driver was transported to Norwalk Hospital for observation by Westport EMS.

The car was removed from the scene by flat-bed truck.

The accident scene was cleared from the scene about 8:30 p.m., firefighters said.
