A Fairfield man was charged last week with leaving the scene of a Beachside Avenue crash.

John Watkins, 27, of Mountain Laurel Road, turned himself in Sept. 30 at police headquarters on a warrant charging him with evading responsibility and failure to drive right.

The incident, police said, took place Aug. 15 when police were told that a vehicle had driven off Beachside Avenue, causing property damage. The driver, however, left the scene before officers arrived, according to the report.

Local police later asked Fairfield officers to try to contact the suspect, identified as Watkins, but were unable to do so. Watkins did contact Westport police until the following day, according to the report.

Bond was set at $7,500 and he is scheduled to appear Oct. 13 at state Superior Court in Norwalk.
