Alan Sterling, 73, of Hale Street, faces driving under the influence and weapons charges after a Sunday evening incident.

After being dispatched to the downtown area near Main Street, officers saw Sterling crossing the double-center line several times, police said.

After Sterling was stopped, an officer said he smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Sterling's breath. Sterling's speech was slow and slurred, and his eyes were red, bloodshot and glassy, police said. Sterling also failed a field sobriety test, according to the report.

While Sterling was being patted down, an officer found a spring-loaded, switchblade knife in the front pocket of Sterling's shirt, police said.

Sterling was charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to drive right, and carrying and sale of dangerous weapons.

He was released on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear Dec. 5 in Norwalk Superior Court.
