Justan Gemmell, 30, of Fairfield, was charged with driving under the influence after a Tuesday night accident.

Officers dispatched to the scene of a motor vehicle accident at Post Road East and Hillspoint Road found Gemmell's vehicle had struck the rear of another vehicle and then attempted to drive away from the scene, police said. He then lost control of his vehicle, striking bushes and a stop sign on Hillspoint Road, police said.

Police said there was a strong odor of alcohol on Gemmell's breath and several bottles of beer were seen on the floor of the vehicle. Gemmell failed field sobriety tests, police said.

Gemmell was charged with operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, evading responsibility, following too closely and drinking while operating a motor vehicle. He was released on $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Aug. 18 in Norwalk Superior Court.
