Dog licenses for the 2012-13 fiscal year will be available in the Westport Town Clerk's office beginning Friday, June 1.
The new licenses cover the period from July 1 through June 30, 2013.
All dogs more than 6 months old must be licensed, Town Clerk Patricia Strauss said, and an infraction carrying a $75 fine may be issued to the owner of any dog not wearing a current-year dog tag.
License fees are $8 for a neutered male or spayed female; $19 for dogs not neutered or spayed. Renewal licenses issued after June 30 will carry a $1-per-month penalty, Strauss said.
"Licensing your dog verifies that rabies immunization is up to date, as the dog owner must present a copy of the pet's rabies certificate when obtaining a license," Strauss said.
The clerk's office last year issued 2,737 dog tags, the most in 15 years, Strauss said.
Tags may be obtained at the Town Clerk's office, Room 105 in Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m..
They also may be obtained by mailing payment and a certificate for each dog to: Westport Town Clerk, P.O. Box 549, Westport CT 06881.
Tags will be mailed to owners along with the certificates. Owners must include a self-addressed, stamped return envelope.
