Westport Public Library will host a slideshow by a doctor who has helped patients around the world 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in the library's McManus Room, 20 Jesup Road.

For more than four decades, Dr. Glenn Geelhoed has taken medical volunteers to the poorest parts of the globe to treat patients and train local health-care workers. He will discuss his recently published book about his journeys, "Gifts from the Poor: What the World's Patients Taught One Doctor About Healing." The discussion and slideshow will be moderated by Steven Greenberg, a CBS radio news reporter and consultant to Yale University School of Medicine.

Geelhoed is the professor of surgery, international medical education, microbiology, immunology and tropical medicine at George Washington University Medical Center; a distinguished professor of global medicine and health at the University of Toledo; and the distinguished professor of global health at SUNY-Syracuse.

The talk is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.
