The long-awaited Bedford Square multi-use development will be taking a major step soon with demolition of the Westport Weston Family Y's former Weeks Pavilion Complex downtown.

David Waldman, project developer, said Monday it should begin within the next week or so.

Workers have been seen at the site -- property bordered by Main Street and Church Lane to Elm Street -- preparing for the demolition.

The commercial/residential complex will incorporate and renovate the Y's Bedford building and a former firehouse as part of the project, while the Weeks Pavilion, a newer structure, will be torn down.

The entire area has been cordoned off for the past two weeks as workers prepared for the demolition. Construction equipment, including a large crane, was also onsite this week.

In addition to 60,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and office space, the development will include 26 one- and two- bedroom apartments, as well as underground parking.

The overall project also involved the relocation of the historic, 1880s Queen Anne-style Gunn house across Elm Street to the nearby, town-owned Baldwin parking lot. The move, which took place last Nov. 18, cleared the site for a segment of the Bedford plans.
