The state's top education official will speak at the Democratic Women of Westport's annual "Souper Luncheon" on Tuesday, March 5.

The lunch is at noon at the home of Elaine and Ernest Arnow, 5 Aspetuck Lane, and will feature a talk by Stefan Pryor, commissioner of the state Department of Education.

Tickets are $20, and proceeds benefit the organization's scholarship fund.

Pryor was appointed in 2011 by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy after a career in public administration.

He holds bachelor's and law degrees from Yale University and was a policy adviser to the mayor of New Haven from 1994 to 1997. Most recently, he was a deputy mayor for economic development for the city of Newark, N.J.

The Democratic Women of Westport was founded in the mid-1960's as an autonomous, independent organization, it said in a news release. It works toward furthering the policies and programs of the Democratic Party locally and nationally and pursues of fair and responsible government, it said.

The proceeds of the luncheon will benefit the DWW Scholarship Fund. Tickets are $20 each, and may be purchased at the door.
