David Hunter, 38, of Fairfield, charged early Friday with driving under the influence.

Police said Hunter was driving west on Charles Street near the intersection of Saugatuck Avenue, and his vehicle's driver-side headlight was out.

Once he stopped, an officer said he smelled alcohol inside Hunter's vehicle, police said. While speaking with Hunter, police said the officer noticed that Hunter's eyes were "red and glassy" and that his speech "was slurred and slow." Hunter also failed field sobriety tests, police said.

Hunter was charged with operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and failure to have headlamps.

He was released on $500 bond, and is scheduled to appear Dec. 27 in Norwalk Superior Court.
