WESTPORT — Officials are on alert after a recent uptick of coyote sightings in town.

Westport Police Lt. David Farrell said there have been multiple reported sightings in recent days including one in which a coyote attacked a dog in the Charcoal Hill area of town.

The incidents prompted Farrell to issue a warning to residents.

“The coyote’s ability to survive and take advantage of food sources found in and around man-made habitats has resulted in an increase in coyote related conflicts,” wrote in a statement released to the press Feb. 1. “We would like to remind those with children and small pets to be aware of the dangers associated with a coyote encounter.”
