A Stratford man was charged last week with motor vehicle theft after police said the owner spotted the pickup theft and followed it until officers took the suspect into custody.

Renato Meythaler, 33, of Peace Street in Stratford, was charged June 9 with second-degree larceny/motor vehicle theft.

The arrest came after the owner of the stolen truck called police headquarters to report that he was following his stolen pickup southbound on Interstate 95 in the area of Exit 17, according to a police report.

Police were able to locate the vehicle and followed it as it left the highway at Exit 16. Officers were able to box in the truck and detain the suspect, identified as Meythaler, the report states.

The owner told police that he owns a landscaping business and the vehicle — a red 2006 Ford F250 pickup — was stolen from a yard in Stratford as workers were loading other trucks.

Meythaler’s bond was set at $5,000 and he is scheduled to appear June 15 at Superior Court.
