Two New York men were charged by Westport police Monday night with stealing $5,000 in merchandise from pharmacies here and area communities.

The men, accompanied by an underage girl, were taken into custody shortly after 8 p.m. Monday when workers at the CVS on Post Road East called police to report that a man had fled after shoplifting merchandise.

One of the men, Jeffrey L. Vaughn, 26, of Jamaica Queens, N.Y., and the girl were found in a car nearby with goods from the CVS as well as other area pharmacies, police said. The merchandise included teeth whitener, hair regrowth treatment, razor blades and allergy medicines, police said.

However, the man suspected of actually taking merchandise from CVS was not in the car, police said. Two State Police troopers and a K-9 were called to the scene to help Westport police search for the suspect.

The other man, Cecil L. Williams, 35, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was recognized in a nearby store by Officer Paul Wargo, and then taken into custody with assistance from Officer Kevin Smith and the troopers.

Williams and Vaughn were both charged with third-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny. Bond for each man was set at $10,000, and court appearances scheduled for Dec. 8.
