Westport police raise cancer awareness

The Westport Police Department unveiled a pink police decal vehicle on Oct. 1 in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The vehicle has been donated to the department for the month of October.

The pink 2017 Maserati, with decal work donated by Fleet Auto Supply of West Haven, was donated by Maserati of Westport, 1026 Post Road East, Westport. The vehicle will not be used for patrol purposes, but will be visible in town for the month of October to show support for the national campaign to raise breast cancer awareness. It will also be making appearances at a number of Breast Cancer Awareness Month events.

Chief Foti Koskinas stated, “We are happy to partner with Maserati of Westport again this year to show our continuing support for cancer awareness. We feel this is a unique way to show our commitment and support to those touched by this devastating disease and their families.”

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection. According for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States. While one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, it is treatable if detected early.

Wine tasting fundraiser set for Oct. 26

Sip & Savor 2018, a wine tasting fundraiser event, will take place Oct. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the the Westport Woman’s Club, 44 Imperial Ave.

A wide variety of wines, provided by Castle Wine & Spirits, will be available for tasting, as well as an array of seasonal hors d’oeuvres by Westport’s Gruel Britannia. Live music and prize drawings will be part of this festive evening as well. Profits from the evening will benefit both need-based college scholarships for high school seniors, as well as community grants to Fairfield County nonprofit organizations. A percentage of all wine orders placed that evening will be donated by Castle Wine to the WWC fundraising effort.

Event co-chairs Christina McVaney and Gloria Smithson suggest guests bring their shopping lists and order needed wines for Thanksgiving, December holiday events, hostess gifts and gift giving, as all wine orders will support WWC charitable causes.

Tickets are $60 each and available at www.westportwomansclub.org. Ticket sales for this wine tasting fundraiser are open to the public (21 years of age or older). Businesses and individuals interested in program ads and/or sponsorships should visit the WWC website for more details before Oct. 18.

Suzuki Music Schools receive $215,000 grant

Suzuki Music Schools of Westport and Orange has received a $215,000 grant from the Daniel E. Offutt III Private Foundation Trust to apply to the expansion of their educational outreach and efforts to bring free cultural events to the public.

Funds will be applied to modify Suzuki Westport’s Blake Recital Room to include live streaming performances and events as well as video production for the community and students. This will also aid in Suzuki’s collaboration on projects with their community partners. Among them, The Westport Library’s new audio visual room and artist educational outreach provided by performers from the Westport Arts Center concert series.

Suzuki Music Schools has several events that are staples of their outreach, including their community Pillow Concert performances, visiting Da Capo Artists series, and the annual Connecticut Guitar Festival that engages all ages and facets of the musical spectrum.


Week continues to Oct. 14

The Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce has announced Restaurant Week — which began Sept. 30 — will continue until Oct. 14. It’s all part of the continuing “Eat Local” campaign to promote area restaurants, which began two weeks ago with the Slice of Saugatuck.

This year, Restaurant Week features two weeks of 24 eateries offering prix fixe meals to suit any foodie’s interest and pocket book. Venues from one end of Westport and Saugatuck, all the way into Southport, will once again be treating diners to a gastronomical feast.

Instead of a single price for all places, each one has set their own prix fixe ranging from $15 to $25 for lunch and $25 to $40 for dinner. Brunch for $15 and up being is offered by some of the locales.

“Restaurant Week is a very important event for us,” said Marc Murphy, manager of The Spotted Horse. “Not only is it a great marketing tool to introduce new customers to our restaurant, it can be seen as a reward to those customers that enjoy dining here on a regular basis. I only see it as a win-win for both sides of the menu.”

Restaurant Week gives restaurateurs an opportunity to show off what they do with hopes of finding new regulars.
