The occupants of two cars that collided Friday night on Post Road East escaped serious injuries even though their cars were heavily damaged.

The accident took place about 7:20 p.m. in front of 1599 Post Road East, and first reports indicated the crash had sparked a fire. But firefighters arriving on the scene determined the smoke was actually steam escaping from one of the vehicle's damaged radiators.

Occupants, evaluated at the scene by Westport EMS personnel, were not seriously injured, according to the fire report.

Both cars had to be towed from the scene.
