Car careens into Saugatuck River

A car traveling down Imperial Avenue on Monday morning slid off a curve, skidded through several yards of brush, and fell down a bank, partially submerging in the Saugatuck River.
The female driver was not injured in the one-car accident, and the vehicle did not leak any fuel or liquids into the river, according to firefighters.
But firefighters had to remove a tree impeding the vehicle's removal from the river before a local towing service could pull it out.
The white four-door sedan apparently slid on Imperial Avenue near Harborview Road at 8:19 a.m., fire officials said. The car's front bumper and hood buckled as the car apparently struck a narrow tree and came to rest, half leaning into the river bank.
Westport EMS reportedly checked the driver, who refused to be taken to Norwalk Hospital. The last fire vehicle left the scene by 9 a.m.
The cause of the accident is being investigated by police.
