The driver of a car that burst into flames on Interstate 95 in Westport escaped without injuries Sunday night, firefighters said.

The incident, reported about 6:45 p.m. Sunday, took place between I-95's northbound Exits 18 and 19.

The driver pulled the vehicle over to the breakdown lane after smelling something burning, according to the fire report, and then noticed flames had erupted. The driver then called 911.

When Engine 5 arrived on the scene the vehicle was fully involved in flames, firefighters said. Firefighters from Engine 2 preformed overhaul.

Two lanes of the highway were shut down during emergency operations. The last fire unit cleared the scene about 7:45 p.m.
