Betty Lou Cummings, a former selectman and volunteer for many community causes, will be presented with the Westport-Weston AARP's 8th annual "Senior Star of the Year" award Dec. 10.

The award will be presented at a holiday luncheon in the Red Barn Restaurant.

The "Senior Star of the Year" award is presented to a local resident who has "taken a leadership role in a range of Westport organizations and been a long time contributor to the welfare of the community," according to publicity for the event.

Cummings, a Westport resident 47 years, currently serves on the board for the Westport Center for Senior Activities and is a active volunteer and fundraiser for Clasp Homes, an organization that promotes independence for those with development disabilities. She has been involved many years promoting Clasp events like A Taste of Westport and emceeing its fashion show fundraiser.

Cummings also previously was a member of the town's Board of Selectmen and the Representative Town Meeting.

She also has been a longtime volunteer at the Westport Library and has helped organize a number of successful library fundraisers, and has been a member of the town's Beautification Committee.

The AARP honors event is open to the public.
