Bedford Middle School literary magazine wins high marks
The names of the students may change, as each class moves on, but the quality remains the same.
Image, the literary magazine at Bedford Middle School in Westport, was recently awarded an "Excellent" ranking by the National Council of Teachers of English for the artistic and content quality of its 2009-10 edition. It also received the honor in the previous year.
Image co-advisor Emily Cerone doesn't believe a three-peat is out of the question.
"I anticipate a high-quality publication yet again, particularly since the 2010-11 edition marks the magazine's 50th anniversary," Cerone said. Bedford's magazine was deemed outstanding amid 413 entries from public and private middle and high schools in the United States and Canada. Only one other middle school in Connecticut was awarded an "excellent ranking."
Bedford eighth- and seventh-grade editors returning to the magazine for the 2010-11 edition are: Jonah Boughton, Jessica Gross, Sophie Call, Hannah DeBalsi, Jennifer Gouchoe and Emily Olrik. Student editors of the 2009-10 publication now attending Staples High School are: Sara Banbury, Amelia Brackett, Lindsey Furman, David Gordan, Anais Mitra and Charlotte Piekara.
"Because of the dedication of our student editors, and the talented writers and artists at Bedford, who are inspired to produce excellent writing by their teachers, my co-advisor, Joan Irvine, and I were able to oversee the production of an outstanding magazine," said Image co-advisor Lynn Sakuma.
