Armed Westport man in custody after hostage drama
An armed man threatening to commit suicide in his Old Orchard Road home late Sunday -- where three children were on the premises -- had to be removed from the house by a police tactical squad after hostage negotiations failed.
Charles Shaw, 41, of 17 Old Orchard Road, was arrested after the Southwest Regional Tactical Team burst into the home, and charged with threatening second-degree, disorderly conduct and three counts of risk of injury to a minor.
The incident began after police received a call about 10 p.m. Sunday from a woman reporting that Shaw was threatening to kill himself with a firearm, and that three children were in the house.
Police set up a perimeter around the house near the intersection of Old Orchard Road and Maple Avenue North.
Hostage negotiators attempted to contact Shaw without success, police said. The regional tactical team was also dispatched to the scene and again unsuccessfully tried to talk Shaw into surrendering.
Members of the tactical squad then entered the house and took Shaw into custody without incident, police said.
No injuries occurred during the operation.
Shaw was held on $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Monday in Norwalk Superior Court.
