AARP is offering free preparation of tax returns at two locations in Westport under a program geared to senior citizens and low- to moderate-income residents.

The AARP volunteers have been trained by the IRS, and appointments are available on Mondays and Wednesdays. The service begins Monday, Feb. 3, and continues through April 14.

Appointments are available:

Mondays: Between 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall by calling 203-341-5090.

Wednesdays: Between 9 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. at the Center for Senior Activities by calling 203-341-5099.

The service includes preparation of federal and state returns, plus electronic filing, and is offered through the AARP/IRS Volunteer Tax Assistance Program.

Department of Human Services Director Barbara Butler said the service is available to all Westport residents regardless of age or income, but it is aimed particularly at senior citizens and people with limited incomes.

Under the program in Westport last year, 340 federal and state returns were filed, most of them electronically, she said.

Butler said taxpayers should bring to their appointments:

A photo ID as proof of identity;

Copies of last year's federal and state returns, if possible;

Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number;

A blank check that shows bank routing number and account number;

Form-1099 from the Social Security Administration if benefits were received;

Form W-2s from all employers;

Form W-2G from gambling winnings;

Form 1099s from banks, stockbrokers, retirement account distributions;
