The modified Cape Cod house at 491 Main St. in Westport is short on square footage at 2,018 square feet, but long on possibilities.

Its location, on a well-traveled street near to the Merritt Parkway, makes it ideal for someone who is the owner of a home-based business or someone who works from home. It is also ideal for anyone who appreciates gardening as a hobby, because the house sits directly across the street from Anthony's Nursery and Garden Center and diagonally across from Daybreak Nurseries, Florist and Landscaping Co.

Built in 1940, the yellow brick house is set back from the road providing a good size front yard, which boasts a pebble patio and stone fire pit hidden behind an arbor. This patio is close to the house and accessed via the family room through French doors.

The front of the property along the street is lined by a white picket fence. The remaining three sides of the 0.46-acre property are bordered by a tall, natural wood privacy fence.

The driveway leads to the back of the house, where there is ample parking for several vehicles and a two-car detached garage. Above it is a legal, income-producing apartment, which can help cover the mortgage or tax payments. The apartment has one all-purpose room, one bedroom and a full bath.

Inside the main house is an unusual configuration of rooms, which adds to its charm, at least to those who appreciate such a set up. Those looking for an open or more contemporary floor plan would probably not be comfortable in this home.

The front door is arched and hints at some of the character that the interior features. Another arched entranceway is between the hallway and kitchen. A wider archway opens the kitchen to the dining room.

In the kitchen the features include Corian counters, a gas range, a small but functional center island, a stainless sink, and cabinets, two of which have glass front doors. Wainscoting covers the lower half of the dining room walls. This room also has a corner cabinet.

From the dining room there is access to the rear of the house into an addition, which houses the office and a laundry closet, and to the north side to a good size family room, which has a ceiling fan and built-in drawers. There is a flexibility to the layout. This family room could also be used as the master bedroom, which at the moment is at the opposite end of the house closer to the front door. There is room to convert a closet into a master bath.

The formal living room, which is also near the front door, has a brick fireplace and wood paneled walls.

There are three bedrooms, two of which are on the first floor. The only room on the second floor is the third bedroom, which has its own full bath.

Outside, there is a slate-topped stone wall at the back entrance, and a stone path to a playhouse, which resembles an over-sized dollhouse on the north side of the house. It has window boxes. Off to one side of the patio is an outdoor shower, which is perfect for gardeners or sunbathers.
