In some hands, napkins are merely tools to erase evidence of a hearty meal, a tasty treat or a libation. In others, they can become accaidental works of art.

The latter group will be getting some love from the Westport Arts Center tonight when it hosts a one-night only exhibit of the "finest napkin drawings" from Westport restaurant patrons, "Dinner Doodles."

"So much of our lives is about visualizing," said Helen Klisser During, director of visual arts at the arts center.

She noted that often, something that is difficult to understand or comprehend can become more accessible through the use of metaphors and images. "The more images that we have ... the clearer things become."

The artists used special dinner napkins, with the Westport Arts Center logo, that were distributed to area restaurants that took part in the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce Restaurant Week, which ran Sept. 30 to Oct. 5.

"We received some fantastic ones," said Klisser During, who will share them with exhibition visitors through a short film and a temporary display along the center's walls.
