A road of its own: Westport Colonial offers quiet setting

The town of Westport is a beehive of cultural activity, yet its living spaces are largely located in quiet settings, perhaps none as much as the custom-built colonial house at 4 Fox Run Lane in the Hunt Club section.

The 5,933-square-foot house, which has a stone façade as well as clapboard, is the only structure on Fox Run Lane, which is a long private, tree-lined drive. One portion of the road is also bordered by a stone wall.

It is worth the trip down this lane to the 12-room house and its two-acre serene setting, which is reminiscent of a botanical garden. The property includes a contemporary style in-ground Gunite pool with Asian influences. It is surrounded by slate and has a hot tub, and beyond the pool to the rest of the fenced-in backyard there is a series of private formal and informal garden spaces for quiet reflection.

So attractively landscaped is the yard that the current family held a wedding there.

There is a large patio that can be accessed from the family room or the foyer. In fact, as visitors enter the true center hall foyer they have a view of the rear yard and the swimming pool.

A double-sided, floor-to-ceiling, red brick fireplace separates the family room from the gourmet, eat-in kitchen. The family room resembles an over-sized sunroom with its numerous windows and skylights. This room also has built-in cabinets.

Two sets of cafe-style doors provide access from the foyer into the butler's pantry -- which has a sink, counter, glass-front cabinets and a built-in wine rack -- and then into the kitchen.

The kitchen has a center island with a wooden top, which houses the Jenn-Air range. Other appliances include a Bosch dishwasher, Bosch double ovens and a Sub-Zero refrigerator.

In the formal living room, there are over-sized nine-over-nine, double-hung windows, a marble fireplace, exposed beams, deep crown molding and three sets of double French doors topped with transoms that lead to the three Juliet-style balconies. The banquet-sized dining room has chair railing and a bump-out bay.

On the second floor, the master bedroom suite has a marble fireplace with a yellow brick firebox and a vaulted ceiling. The master bath has an unusual double vanity with a glass counter as opposed to the more typical marble or granite. The flooring is honed marble. Other amenities include a jetted tub, large walk-in marble shower and a water closet that includes a bidet.

In addition to the other bedrooms on the second level, there is an office space which has two entrances and a half bath with honed marble floor. The bedrooms are all ensuite, and there is also a laundry room with a utility sink and cabinets on this floor.

A back stairwell leads to a private, in-law or au pair suite, which has wall-to-wall carpeting, a kitchenette, full bath and two window seats. On the first floor, there is a separate entrance into the mudroom, which includes access to the three-bay attached garage, a pantry closet and a half bath.

The finished portion of the walk-out basement level has wall-to-wall carpeting and a gym with a mirrored wall. There is also a large room with an alcove and two sliding doors to the side yard. The unfinished portion is cavernous and is ideal for storage.
