Two men suspected of trying to burglarize Post Road East businesses early Monday, interrupted by a police officer on patrol, escaped during a chase into New York State that damaged two Westport police crusiers.
The men, both wearing hooded sweat shirts and one of them carrying a pry bar, were seen about 12:30 a.m. Monday casing the stores at 877 Post Road East, police said.
Officer Steve Pritchard, who spotted the pair, turned in the parking lot to go back to check on the men, causing them to run behind the building and jump into a white Dodge mini van with New York license plates.
The van sped away and headed onto Interstate 95 southbound, refusing to stop for pursuing Westport officers. During the chase, police said the van intentionally struck and damged two Westport police cruisers.
Assisting Westport during the I-95 chase were State Police troopers and local police from Darien, Stamford, Greenwich and Port Chester, N.Y., where the van crashed.
The suspects remained at large Monday afternoon and Westport police are continuing the investigation, including the men's possible link to two burglaries at Mitchells of Westport clothing store in February.
