Westport police investigate fiery, fatal crash
WESTPORT — A person was killed early Sunday morning in a fiery crash on Weston Road.
The car smashed into a utility pole near 57 Weston Road just before 1 a.m., downing electrical wires and catching the vehicle on fire, according to a release from the police department. The police and fire departments were called to the area on the report of a large fire, police said.
Police have not identified the victim.
Investigators had cleared the scene by 8:30 p.m. Sunday, though Weston Road remained closed as utility crews continued to work in the area.
In a release put out Sunday night, Westport police said that crews hope to have the roadway open prior to the morning commute. Police planned to provide an update as soon as it is available.
“Motorists are encouraged to monitor our social media pages for these updates,” the release said.
In the meantime, police said that vehicles traveling southbound on Weston Road should detour east onto Lyons Plains Road, stay right onto Coleytown Road before turning right onto North Avenue, followed by a right onto Easton Road. Vehicles traveling northbound on Main Street towards Weston Road should stay right onto Easton Road/Route 136, then turn left onto North Avenue followed by a left onto Coleytown Road onto Lyons Plains Road. The United Methodist Church of Westport and Weston is accessible from the south (Silver Brook Road side) at the road closure.
