The purchase of a 31-acre open-space parcel in New Preston has been successfully completed by the town of Washington.

First Selectman Mark Lyon said Oct. 20 the property`s owner, Washington Partners LLC, had agreed to the cleanup required on the property and was to sign the contract.

The parcel sits on the corner of Route 202 and Flirtation Avenue. It will open public access to a large area that could be used for passive recreation, Mr. Lyon said. He envisions walking trails on the property but said that would rest with the Parks & Recreation Commission.

The cleanup required involved "junk, scrap metal and old tires," Mr. Lyon said.

It was determined there are no environmental issues at the parcel during a study conducted by Russ Direnzo of LFR Inc. in Sandy Hook.

Town residents approved in April an expenditure of $500,000 for the property from the town`s Open Space Fund. The expenditure was subject to a successful environmental study.
