WESTPORT - Reda Gul, a 2016 Staples High School graduate, was killed in a crash in Pakistan on Tuesday.

According to The International News, a Pakistani web site, Gul, 19, was killed after the driver of the vehicle she was riding in lost control and overturned near Marhati Banda on the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway. Gul was a student living in a private hostel in Islamabad.

According to 06880danwoog.com, friends in Westport say that after Staples, she returned to her native country to study medicine, in Peshawar. As a freshman, she played on the Staples basketball team. It also reported that funeral was held in Pakistan.

The driver of the vehicle, Hamza Javed. and Pakistan Army officer, Lt Muhammad Hassan, a passenger, were also injured in the accident. The International News reported that Javed was arrested by police. Those in the vehicle were enroute to to an officers mess hall in Peshawar, the International News reported.

In January 2016, Gul was named one of 19 “Students of the Month” at Staples. The citation, according to school officials, is designed to give credit to students who might not normally receive special recognition, but who consistently make positive contributions to the school.
