STAMFORD — A Stamford police officer spent the night in the hospital after a driver crashed into his police car Sunday afternoon.

Sgt. Richard Phelan was in his car in the southbound left lane on Summer Street when his car was struck by a driver in the middle lane who turned into Phelan’s car, crashing into the passenger side, according to Sgt. Robert Shawinsky.

Phelan was taken to the hospital for his injuries, which were deemed non-life threatening. The other driver was issued a summons. Police did not disclose the specifics of the violation.

Phelan is part of the Stamford Police K-9 team. His canine companion is a black Labrador named Cronin. The dog was uninjured in the collision.
