Greenwich Academy duels to FAA soccer draw with Masters

After edging Rye Country Day School on Saturday, the Greenwich Academy soccer team found itself embroiled in another close FAA game Tuesday against Masters School. But this time the Gators had to settle for a tie.

Courtney Griffin's goal in the 28th minute was the only goal for Greenwich Academy in its 1-1 draw against visiting Masters.

"The first half we came out and dominated possession, but we had trouble putting the ball in the back of the net," GA assistant coach Charlie Alt said. "We played a 5-4-1, which enabled us to control possession in the midfield."

The Gators' goal came off a set piece, as Griffin headed in a corner kick from Lucy Williams. Williams scored the game-winner in GA's 1-0 triumph against Rye Country Day on Saturday.

"We have been working on our set pieces all week," Alt said. "It was nice to see us score off that corner kick."

Masters tallied off a counter attack in the 60th minute to knot the score at 1-1. Katherine Goldsmith made four saves in goal for the Gators, who received stellar defensive play from Katherine Coe. Greenwich Academy (6-4-1) will visit FAA rival Greens Farms Academy Thursday at 4 p.m.
