A Bridgeport man has been charged with murder for allegedly killing his former girlfriend, according to a city official.

Corey Ramos, a 30-year-old charged in the slaying of Jennifer Brelsford, is in custody at the Bridgeport Police Department ahead of his Monday arraignment, according to city spokesman Scott Appleby.

Police say Ramos illegally passed through the Canadian border Monday and was arrested. On Thursday, police obtained a warrant to arrest Ramos, who was in Vermont State Police’s custody, Appleby wrote.

By Friday, detectives headed to Vermont to bring Ramos to Bridgeport after he had a hearing in Vermont and waived extradition, according to Appleby, and he was charged with murder.

Capt. Brian Fitzgerald said earlier this week that Brelsford, 40, was found dead on Oct. 18 when officials came by for a welfare check. Police noted “obvious signs of trauma to her body,” according to Fitzgerald.
