A fifth-grade teacher at King's Highway Elementary School will walk in the 2nd annual Nurturing Minds Walk-a-Thon starting at 9 a.m. Sunday at Wakeman Field behind Bedford Middle School, 88 North Ave.
Ashley Moran, who will be joined by faculty, students, students'parents and other Westporters in the 5-K walk, is seeking more participants for the walk-a-thon to benefit Secondary Education for Girls Advancement (SEGA), a boarding school in Tanzania for economically disadvantaged girls.
Moran has supervised student teachers, conducted training workshops and was a founding teacher at the Connecticut Friends School. In 2005, she spent five weeks touring private and public schools in Tanzania, meeting with administrators and teachers. It was during this time that Moran realized that her experience in creating positive school communities in the U.S. could translate into a valuable resource to the school communities of Tanzania.
There will be raffle items, refreshments for all walkers. The walk-a-thon is sponsored by donations, which can be made at nurturingmindsinafrica.org.
