The Staples Tuition Grants Committee recently awarded $300,000 in scholarships at its 68th annual awards ceremony in the Staples High School library.

In all, 108 grants were given to 25 members of the 2011 graduating class and 83 Staples alumni currently attending college across the nation, compared to $265,000 in grants to 90 students last year, and $198,000 to 78 students in 2009.

"STG raises money each year to help SHS seniors and graduates with demonstrated financial need to help close the gap between tuition costs and what students are able to afford," STG Co-Chairwoman Lisa Krosse said in a statement. "Our number one goal is to raise more money than the year before so we can help more students realize their goal of additional education. Each year the applications increase -- this year there were 130 as compared to 117 last year."

This year Dan Woog, the Staples boys soccer coach, Staples alumnus and historian, and several current and former committee members compiled a history profiling the grant's Named Awards. A crowd of more than 200 individuals, including student honorees, their parents, donors and members of Westport education and civic community listened as Woog explained the history behind some of these 67 scholarships named for individuals, organizations and corporations.

Student speaker Harrison Eisenberg, a member of Staples' Class of 2010 who attends Tulane University as an engineering major, followed Woog, explaining how the grant allowed him to attend that college.

Anne Hardy, STG Donor Committee chairwoman, listed the named awards established this year: the Cameron Bruce Memorial Scholarship, Chartwell's Scholarship Award, Frederick A DeLuca Foundation Award, David and Geri Epstein Foundation Scholarship, Eric Goldschmidt Memorial Award, No. 15 Preston Hirten Memorial Scholarship, Dr. Elliott Landon Award, Staples High School Reunion Award (Class of 1950 and 1960) and the Westport Sunrise Rotary Dick Eldh Scholarship. Additionally, two awards were named in honor of Woog and Harold Kamins for their work on behalf of STG.

This year's STG Committee members include co-chairmen Krosse and Arlene Doherty, along with Anne Hardy, AnnMarie Massie, Kathi Moran, Diana Weller, Carey Weber, Patty Cope, Michele Williams, Lori Sochol, Alex Jinishian, Carl McNair, Tom Whelan, Susan Stefenson and MarySue Waterman.
