The Friends of Sherwood Island State Park has elected its 2010-11 Board of Directors.

Sheila O'Neill will continue to serve as president of the group, while Liz-Ann Koos, Alvin Hageman and Alison Rivard will serve as vice president, treasurer and secretary, respectively. The other directors are Marilyn Bakker, Winifred Balboni, Wendy Batteau, Marge Dunham, Fred Frillici, Tina Green, Hope Hageman, Jim Hood, Liz Milwe, Louis Pietig, Allen Raymond, Don Snook and Susan Thomsen.

Founded in 1995, the Friends organization strives to preserve, maintain, improve and enhance Sherwood Island State Park for the benefit of the general public. In partnership with the state Department of Environmental Protection, the group's major project in recent years was raising money for construction of the park's new nature center, which opened last summer.

O'Neill said, in a statement, the Friends will continue to support the center with operational funds and hands-on help.

The group's major fundraiser will be the annual Shorefest Lobster Supper and Silent Auction, set for Sept. 10.

The nature center, located between the East Beach and the salt marsh nature trail, is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with activities every hour. Staff naturalists, summer interns and volunteer docents oversee a variety of activities.
