Runners take steps for world 'Harmony"™

All was in "Harmony" on Tuesday as area runners participating in a 10,000-mile worldwide trek for international good will made a stop in Westport.

The World Harmony Run USA started at the United Nations in April, and runners -- who began Tuesday's leg of the relay in New Haven -- were greeted during a brief stop at Westport's Riverwalk en route to New York, where the event was scheduled to end later in the day.

Runners through the region accompanied a torch-bearer, symbolizing the goal of harmony through sports, according to organizers. Seven runners have been with the torch for every leg of the run, from various nations, and other torches were lit to travel to more 100 countries to promote international friendship and understanding.

The World Harmony Run is the world's largest relay run, first organized in 1987. It was inspired by the late peace advocate, Sri Chinmoy, as a way for people to express their hope for a more harmonious world.
