Jewish groups to 'Celebrate Israel' at Westport event
UJA/Federation of Westport Weston and area synagogues will hold a "Fairfield County Celebrate Israel's 63rd Independence Day" on Sunday, May 15, at Bedford Middle School, 88 North Ave.
From 9:30 to 11 a.m., seven area synagogue religious schools will present "Yom Israel -- Israel Experience" for children, including an Israeli defense forces boot camp simulation, a 3-D virtual tour of Israel, a virtual archaeological dig, a GaGa pit (Israeli dodgeball), Israeli crafts, Israeli dancing and more. Adults are invited to join their children in kindergarten through sixth grade; children not attending religious schools are also welcome if accompanied by an adult. Children in kindergarten through third grade must attend with an adult.
At 11:15 a.m., "Rock with the IDF," a concert of traditional and modern Israeli tunes by soldiers of the Israel defense forces musical ensemble, sponsored by Friends of the IDF, will be held.
At 12:45 p.m. will be "Defending Israel in a Sea of Turmoil," a presentation by Kenneth Jacobson, deputy national director of the Anti-Defamation League. Jacobson will give an overview of current events in the Middle East and how they may affect Israel regionally, at the United Nations and in the United States.
The event will also include vendors offering Israeli wares, from handmade jewelry and crafts to Israeli books and original Israeli fine art. Mediterranean foods such as falafel and shawarma will be available from a kosher concession.
The event is free. No reservations or advance tickets required. Visit www.ujafederation.org or call 203-226-8197.
