There's nothing sweeter than helping your neighbors in need, except maybe when you can get an ice cream for doing it.

So pick up some canned goods and other non-perishable foods and bring them down to Frosty Bear Ice Cream on Saturday, Nov. 6. In celebration of his first year in business at Christie's Country Store, 161 Cross Highway in Westport, and to help those less fortunate, John Martin is offering a free ice cream cone to anyone who brings donations. Martin, in collaboration with Homes with Hope, is calling it, "Cones for Cans." The foodstuffs will be donated to the food pantry at the Gillespie Center in Westport.

"We are grateful that Frosty Bear has chosen to end their successful season with an acknowledgement that not all Westport residents are as fortunate as others," said Jeff Wiese,r president and CEO of Homes with Hope. "The cans, cereal, pasta, etc. that is collected for the food pantry goes immediately to help people in real need and in real hunger. As we start the holiday season, the need only intensifies, so we appreciate the Martin family bringing this awareness to the fore and helping us stock the pantry."

"For us," Martin said, "this is a way to thank the community for making our first year such a success. We are already looking forward to next year and hope we can, in the meantime, help alleviate the situation for those who are struggling in these difficult economic times."

Frosty Bear will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, for contributions to the food pantry. The rain date is Sunday, Nov. 7. Bring in at least one can of food and receive one free ice cream cone. Additional cans of food are encouraged.
