Wreckers hope for golden year
Higuchi said, "I am honored to be captain and it feels great. The five captains will help lead the team by setting good examples and helping the underclassmen."
Wreckers Coach Laddie Lawrence said, "I expect my captains to be leaders on the team, to take charge of the warm-ups, and guide and mentor the younger kids. They set the tone for focus and success."
Staples has many talented runners and will see contributions from its captains as well as senior Raphael Ray, junior Mikolaj Kulis and sophomores Henry Wynne and Patrick Nolan. Wormser said, "This year Jack and Ben will hopefully be two of the strongest front runners that we have had on the team in a while."
In addition to these returners, senior Steven Graf will be joining the team. Lawrence believes that if he is able to stay healthy, Graf will be a varsity contributor. Roche said, "Steven Graf, a runner who ran for us his freshman year and was incredible, but had to quit running due to an injury, has just come back and is looking to be quite good."
Over the summer, Staples trained hard. Aldrich sais, "We prepared for the season by training rigorously throughout the summer, hitting around 60 plus mile weeks towards the end." This strong work ethic will help propel Staples to success.
The Wreckers will face many tough teams this year. Caffrey said, "Darien and Danbury will be undoubtably our toughest competition."
Lawrence added, "Danbury will be the toughest team since they were county champions last year on what we thought was a re-building year."
The coach hopes that the team will be able to work hard and accomplish it's one goal: to be better than the year before. Every year Lawrence strives for his team to improve and add to the success of this storied program.
