The Westport YMCA sixth grade boys travel basketball team won the Fairfield County Basketball League B League Championship March 12 with a 40-36 win over Stamford 40-36, avenging a 53-36 regular season loss.

Westport played tenacious defense and adjusted its game plan, which enabled the team to deny the Stamford guards any opportunity to run its plays. As a result, Westport took the lead by the end of the third quarter.

Steady control by point guard Cayne Mandell and guard Louis Colosimo set the tone for Westport and allowed the team to work the ball in low for forwards Thomas Tamiolakis and high scorer Jesse Levinson.

Strong rebounding by forwards Josh Berman and Adam Feuer kept the ball in Westport's hands as timely play by guard Gary Avery and a well placed jumper by Noah Lominitz made the win a true team effort.

This capped an 11-3 season for Westport, which included victories in the playoffs over a seventh grade Weston team as well as teams from Southbury and Easton.
