The Staples boys and girls track teams placed second with 38 points and 18th with 12 points, respectively at the State Open championship Monday at New Britian

Three Staples relay teams broke school records at the meet, all of which had been in place for more than 20 years. The girls 4x400 team of seniors Ingrid Johnson and Emily Hanrahan, junior Courtney Mullen and freshman Tyler Scanlin ran a 4:02.13 to take sixth.

The girls 4x800 meter team of seniors Kristin Weiler and Johnson, junior Alex Popkin and sophomore Georgia Kursten re-set their own record at 9:31.59 and came in fifth place.

Not only did the the boys 4x800 team of seniors Sean Gallagher and Jack Roche and sophomores Walker Marsh and Henry Wynne break the school record, it also won (7:53.07) and had a personal record by more than six seconds.

Other winners for the Wreckers were senior Raphael Ray in the 400 meters (48.40) and the boys 4x400 (3:20.64) of Gallagher, Roche, Ray and junior Jon Heil.

Wynne was second in the mile (4:19.32) and junior Lexie Schacne was fourth in the girls pole vault (11-0).

All the above competitors will be competing in the New England championship tomorrow in Burlington, Vt.
