The Staples boys and girls ski teams will compete for the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League (CISL) State Open title tomorrow at Mount Southington Ski Area. Staples closes out the regular season today.
The Lady Wreckers are clearly a major threat to win the Open title and will be on the alert after being surprised by Wilton winning the Feb. 16 meet.
Losing top honors by only .37 seconds, the Staples girls raced to a top-six 308.66 to Wilton's 308.29, Barlow's 315.10 and Darien's 316.79.
Senior captain and Team Connecticut representative Melissa Sweeney led the Lady Wreckers with 48.53 for fourth overall among the five teams competing. Freshman Alison Thompson was seventh overall with 49.31 followed by junior Caroline Howe's 52.09 for 11th overall. Both Thompson and Howe alpine-train at Queechee Lake, Vt.
The 13th, 17th and 21st overall spots were earned by sophomore Caroline Corbally (52.36), juniors Kate Collins (52.77) and Michelle Strage (53.60).
The Staples boys placed third overall of the eight teams at the Feb. 16 meet with a 297.28 to Wilton's very strong 290.60, Barlow's 304. 70 and Darien's 307.01.
Staples was led by senior captain Mike Scott, who finished eighth overall out of the 80 boys racing with 48.51.
