The snowstorm that struck on Friday caused four basketball games and a swim meet to be postponed and another swim meet to be cancelled. The Staples girls basketball team was supposed to host Fairfield Warde while the Staples boys hoopsters was scheduled to play at Fairfield Warde. The Weston girls basketball team was supposed to host Newtown and the Weston boys cagers were supposed to play at Newtown. All four basketball games will be made up on Monday at 7 p.m. at the same scheduled places.

In the pool, the Staples boys swimming team will now swim at Darien on Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. instead of Friday while the Weston boys swim meet at Fairfield Prep is cancelled.

One captain from each of the four basketball teams feel their teams will be affected by this switch but are confident they will be able to find positives with the changes.

"It's definitely going to be tough but I think we can stick it out," Lady Trojans senior tri-captain Christina Welsh said.

Lady Wreckers senior captain Nikki Brill said, "I don't think it will have a humongous toll on us because [Staples] Coach [Ed] Huydic scheduled a practice for us on Saturday [to go with the regular 1-3 p.m. practice on Sunday] so we can work on our chemistry and plays and we'll be ready for Warde on Monday."

Trojan boys senior tri-captain Justin Mettel said, "It won't be that bad because we'll have two extra days to prepare for Newtown and I think it will benefit us."

Wrecker boys senior tri-captain Luke Yeager said, "We were looking forward to play today [Friday] but we have two more days to prepare and get ready to face Warde on Monday."

Playing on Monday creates a hardship because all four basketball teams are scheduled to play on Tuesday. Staples' boys host Westhill at 7 p.m. while the Lady Wreckers play at Westhill at 5:45 p.m. Weston's girls play at Bunnell at 7 p.m. while Weston's boys host Bunnell at 7 p.m. One alternative would have been to play on Saturday, sans Staples boys because wrestling is scheduled at Warde's gym.

"Either way, we're ready to play no matter what day it is," Yeager said.

Welsh said, "Playing on Saturday would be nice and it would be easier for us to have only three games next week."

The Lady Trojans were originally scheduled to play three games next week but will now play four games. In addition to Bunnell on Tuesday, they host Kennedy on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Oxford on Friday at 7 p.m.

"I never heard of it [playing four games in a week] happen before," Welsh said. "It will definitely be a challenge to our composure."

One possiblitity that has been mulled around, at least for Staples-Westhill was to move the game to Wednesday, which may or may not happen. Warde's boys and girls moved their Tuesday game to Wednesday to avoid playing on back-to-back nights. The Mustangs play at Trinity Catholic on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and the Lady Mustangs host Trinity Catholic at 7 p.m.

"It will be tough but we'll make it through," Mettel said. "It would be better to play [Newtown] on Saturday so we don't have to play two games in a row but adversity brings out the best in people."

Brill said, "To be honest, it's great to have an extra practice but we're ready to play them," Brill said. "You have to take what life gives you. If life gives you lemons, you make lemonade."

Yeager said, "We work hard in practice so we'll be in shape in we'll be able to handle [playing on back-to-back nights] it."
