Mulia and Galin lead the way

The Westport Parks and Recreation department sponsored the eighth race of the 2010 Road Runners program with an 8.4-mile run starting at Burying Hill Beach. Adam Mulia of Brooklyn, N.Y., who won this race last year, won his first race of the season as he led 115 runners with a time of 48:39.
Westporters Nadeem Ahmad (49:50), winner of three races this year, and Tom Harding (50:33), finished second and third, respectively. Catherine Galin (59.41) of Westport won the women's division and finished 18th overall. Patricia Mulia (1:00.43) of Brooklyn and Jane Ott (1:04.45) of Darien were second and third in the women's division, placing 19th and 31st, respectively. Other Westport-Weston residents who finished in the top 10 were Paul Greenberg (54:52), sixth; David Allen (55:16), seventh; Dan August (56:09), ninth; and Roland Lochoff (56:44), 10th.
This week's gift certificate and prize winners were Bruce August, Chris Driscoll, Jeff Johnston, Colleen Losee, Daspina Malasky, Nancy Kondub-Harris and Bob Laufer whose place stick numbers were drawn at the post-race prize lottery. This week's award tee-shirt winners were Ike Groff, Roland Lochoff, Mark Thompson, Jane Ott, Jan Triani and Wendy Walker.
The next scheduled race is tomorrow at 8 a.m. with a 9.3 mile run starting at Compo Beach. The runners will start at the Compo Beach Exit and run straight (west) on Compo Beach Road, turning left on South Compo Road, right on Greens Farms Road, left on Hillspoint Road, right on Hillandale Road, right on Morningside Drive, right on Greens Farms Road, right on Center Street, left on West Parrish Road, left on Hillandale Road, left on Hillspoint Road, left on Prospect Road, right on Greens Farms Road, left on Hillspoint Road, left on Soundview Drive and finish at the garden island 35 yards past the cross walk at Westport Avenue. The record for the 9.3 mile run of 49:59 was set by Tom Harding of Westport in 2001. The women's record of 1:01:33 was set by Heidi Girstle Mitchell in 2000.
All interested persons are invited to participate. Applications for and information about the program are available at the recreation offices at Longshore Club Park, at the start of each Saturday's race, or at westportroadrunners.org. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the wood Pavilion near the volleyball courts at Compo Beach. The weekly fee is $5 (resident) and $8 (non-resident). All participants may park in the Compo Beach parking lot.
