The Staples girls track team opened up at 3-0.

Staples defeated Greenwich 90-55 at home last Wednesday. The Lady Wreckers won a tri-meet Monday, beating host Brien McMahon, 93-52, and Bridgeport Central, 145-0.

Against Greenwich, senior tri-captain Ingrid Johnson was the star performer as she won the 800 meters and was a member of the winning 4x400 meter relay team.

Johnson said, "I'm definitely pleased with the results. However, Greenwich is very strong in the middle distance events, so with some of their better runners having already run the mile beforehand, it made my job in the 800 a little easier."

Senior captain Emily Hanrahan ran the 400 and took third place overall. She says she is also happy with her performance.

Another stand-out performer was senior Liz Moyer who won both the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and the 100-meter high hurdles. Freshman Caroline Koenig won the 3,200 meters.

Sophomore Sydney Friedman won the pole vault, senior captain Kristin Weiler won the javelin and junior Misha Strange won triple jump.

Johnson said, "Courtney Mullen, Emily Hanrahan, and Caroline Koenig all ran very well."

Hanrahan credited the field event competitors.

Against McMahon and Central, Mullen won the 400 meters, sophomore Georgia Kursten won the 800, Koenig won the 3,200, junior Lexie Schachne won the high jump, senior Megan Lipset won the pole vault and freshman Melissa Mann was victorious in the javelin.
